OUR STORY

If students are not given a venue to inform others of their research, it is like a musician who never gets to publicly perform their music.”

The New Hampshire Academy of Science (NHAS) was originally founded in 1919 as an affiliate organization of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The NHAS became a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable corporation in 2016. We are one of 45 states that have an Academy of Science with a total of over 125,000 members. As part of our mission, we support high school and middle school students who wish to perform original STEM research in an authentic scientific laboratory. We have supported the participation of over 200 students in regional and national scientific meetings where they published and presented their research performed at our STEM Center. We have sponsored or mentored students participating at meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, NIH IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence, Poster presentations at Dartmouth College, and the NHAS Annual STEM Symposium. In 2024, we will be sending 6 students to an international conference in Taiwan to present their conservation work on species endangerment and biodiversity loss. These opportunities to directly participate in science have had remarkable results in advancing the career path of our NHAS participants.

We currently lease over 3,000 square feet of lab space on the campus of Crossroads Academy in Lyme NH where we operate our advanced STEM Center. The STEM Center has over a half million dollars of advanced research equipment spanning the STEM spectrum. Our NHAS STEM Center is owned and operated by the NHAS and its programs are independent from Crossroads Academy.

Our programs are supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health-National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the Couch Family Foundation. We have 5 scientists on our staff that can be viewed on our Meet Our Faculty webpage. These scientists are highly skilled and dedicated to mentoring students to perform original research that will many times end in publications.
